Launch of the SOCORRO online training course

Bijgewerkt op: 23 jun. 2023

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the SOCORRO online training course.

'Combatting corrosion: An Introduction to SOCORRO' is an entry level, free online course where you can learn about the science behind corrosion: how, when, and why corrosion happens, and what we can do to monitor it in different sites where water meets steel. We will introduce you to the SOCORRO approach and how to monitor the risk of corrosion in your steel infrastructure, its financial cost, and impact on the environment.

Through a 2-week syllabus, involving only 2 hours of your time per week, scientists from our SOCORRO team will walk you through the science of corrosion, how to monitor it and take action before it is too late.

Produced by the University of Kent, this online course features SOCORRO researchers from across the Interreg2Seas area, including Geert Potters (Antwerp Maritime Academy), Marjolein Vanoppen (UGent), Jeroen Tacq (Sirris), Burak Karabulut and Brent Verhoeven (KULeuven), and Martin Smith (University of Brighton) amongst others.

This online course is designed to assist you and your team in understanding the risks of untreated corrosion and to help you monitor your steel infrastructure (when it's in contact with water) using a range of sensors and parameters, and an freely available AI system that we have developed to help you in this task.

Dissemination and reuse of the resources developed as part of SOCORRO is one of our priorities. Therefore, we are sharing with you the knowledge we have gained and the research findings about how different sensors operate under different environmental conditions.

More importantely, we have used data from our demonstration sites (e.g. seawater, brackish water, water treatment, laboratory) to train the SOCORRO AI. This will help you assess and monitor cossorion levels and the rate of corrosion in your own steel infrastructure, whether it is at sea, in a harbour or in an industrial setting.

If you want to learn more about how to use the SOCORRO approach and seek out corrosion before it is too late, visit our online course. Through videos, along with some articles, reflective exercises and quizzes, we will walk you through the science behind corrosion and how to monitor the risk of corrosion happening on your site and infrastructure.
